The WP29 (group of all the EU data protection authorities) has sent a letter to Whatsapp following its T&C update and has requested further information regarding the data sharing of its users’ personal information with Facebook.
The European authorities are concerned by the way users have been informed of the update and question the validity of their consent.
They also question the effectiveness of control mechanisms offered to users to exercise their rights and the effects that the data sharing will have on people that are not a user of any other service within the Facebook family of companies.
The Working Party takes this issue very seriously as it” urges Whatsapp not to proceed with the sharing of users’ data until the appropriate legal protections can be assured.”
You can find the letter here.
